At its Innovation Bar, Hilscher presented the new product netPI, the industrial-suited Raspberry Pi 3 for automation networks. Product Manager Armin Beck and Innovation Manager Immanuel Blöcher withstood a relentless barrage of visitor questions. "The story about netPI, as a custom design of a Pi 3 with Real-Time Ethernet connection for industrial use with secured Linux software, Docker and the Open Innovation thought is quickly told, but to find out which applications people really have in mind with this ecosystem was an amazing experience for me", Armin Beck says. The crowded booth showed the demand on the market to have a freely programmable but secure platform that is based on a Raspberry Pi compatible circuit, that can be easily integrated into industrial networks. Of interest was also the distribution strategy via Amazon. This way, private users can also participate in the netPI concept without much effort. At the same time and upon request, the netPI is available to bulk users as OEM solution.
Big data and predictive maintenance are becoming more and more practice-relevant. A system integrator has now developed models for the automotive manufacturing industry that are capable of reliably predicting imminent breakdowns of complex machines. netIOT Edge Gateways offer the ideal platform to roll out the system globally. The gateways are passively integrated into existing field networks within minutes without adapting the PLC or other components. The adjustment of the system model for failure prediction takes place directly on the edge gateways, so that no further cost-intensive infrastructure for data evaluation has to be created.
The focus of this year's SPS IPC Drives was on actual projects in which production quality is ensured and where changes can be reliably predicted. Especially plant equipment suppliers with many contract customers see great potential for remote monitoring in order to significantly increase customer satisfaction with regard to operational reliability. The detection of changes in the manufacturing process or in the operation of a plant in process technology enables immediate intervention, which guarantees a continuous quality of the end products and significantly reduces costs due to production downtimes. It turned out that the netIOT Edge Gateway family is very well positioned in terms of connectivity, diagnostic functions and edge computing and meets all prerequisites to set standards in the market.
